A report of domestic violence triggered Haverhill Police’s response early this morning that led to a man being shot “multiple times.”

Carrie Kimball, spokeswoman for Essex County District Attorney Jonathan W. Blodgett, said police were dispatched at 5 a.m. to 23 Thorndike Ave.

“In the course of their response, they shot a male multiple times,” Kimball said. She said the unidentified man was transported to Lawrence General Hospital and then to Boston. “He is still alive at this time,” she said at 10:24 this morning.

State Police spokesman David Procopio earlier told WHAV no police officer was injured. Procopio did not name the officer or officers that responded or the person—described as a “suspect”—who was taken to the hospital.

Police cordoned off the area near Thorndike and Gove Streets, not far from Lafayette Square. Police Chief Alan R. DeNaro and Deputy Anthony Haugh were observed on the scene, along with the department’s MRAP military-style vehicle.

The State Police Detective Unit for Essex County, Crime Scene Services Section and Ballistics responded and are conducting the investigation.
