Lawrence General Hospital is receiving nearly $20 million from the federal government in money set aside for “hospitals in areas that have been particularly impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is distributing $12 billion nationally, including $494,673,926 for hospitals in Massachusetts. The agency said the $12 billion is going to 395 hospitals who provided inpatient care for 100 or more COVID-19 patients through April 10. The money will be used to support healthcare-related expenses or lost revenue attributable to COVID-19 and to ensure uninsured Americans can receive testing and treatment for COVID-19.

The distribution methodology takes into consideration the challenges faced by facilities serving a significantly disproportionate number of low-income patients.
