A 64-year-old Methuen woman died and her husband was injured during a single-alarm fire late Friday night.

The fire broke out around 11:30 in a second-floor bedroom at a single-family home at 2 Lisa Lane, Methuen, said Methuen Deputy Fire Chief Scott Sullivan. Initially, he said, two police officers attempted to rescue the women, but were constrained by the flames.

The identity of the woman is expected to be released by the Essex County District Attorney’s office. Sullivan, who is investigating the cause of the fire, said the woman’s husband was taken to Lawrence General Hospital, but was able to return to the fire scene an hour and a half later.

“The fire does not appear to be suspicious,” said Jennifer Mieth, public information officer, for State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey. However, an investigation is still underway by Methuen Fire and Police and State Police assigned to both the state Fire Marshal and Essex County District Attorney.
