Haverhill Cancels Formal Earth Day Cleanup; Methuen Marks 120 COVID-19 Cases, Haverhill at 98

Organizers of Haverhill’s annual Earth Day citywide cleanup have decided to cancel the event because of current gathering rules and uncertainty over future dates.

Earth Day Committee members say that while the formal event has been cancelled, residents should clean-up their own front yards and be ready to help elsewhere when it is safe.

The second in a three-part series of Haverhill River Bards poetry and open mic nights, planned for May 1, has been cancelled. The event was to have featured the Haverhill High School Literary Club. The last scheduled date of Friday, June 5, with Blaine Hebbel. Remains on the schedule.

The latest list of cancellations come as Methuen marks 120 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 13 recovered and Haverhill with 98 with four or five in the hospital and 31 deemed as recovered. Essex County now reports 1,653 cases, contributing to the state’s total of 13,837 and 260 deaths.

Across the border, Rockingham County now indicates 246 individuals with the virus contributing to the Granite State’s total of 715 and nine deaths.

In his daily update, Mayor James J. Fiorentini reports Cedar’s Mediterranean Foods donated face shields to the city. They were distributed to police, fire and nursing homes.  Southwick Clothing also began production of cloth masks at its Brooks Brothers factory in Haverhill.
