Is Local News Just for Wealthy Communities? Here’s Your Chance to Put ‘Skin in the Game?’

(File photograph.)

These are difficult times to be sure and all of us at WHAV hope you and your families are safe and well.

This is the last formal day of WHAV’s annual March Membership Month. Thank you to new WHAV members and old friends who are staying the course.

Even before the pandemic, major national funders of nonprofit journalism recognized demand for grants to pay for local news far outweighed money available. In rationing support, grantmakers appear to favor those communities with a good deal of skin in the game. The American Journalism Project, for example, looks for 1) “Demonstrated buy-in” for the news organization, 2) “committed support from local philanthropy” and 3) operating budgets of between $500,000 and $2 million.

WHAV’s enormous audience numbers suggest only one standard is covered. If you feel strongly that local news is not just for wealthy communities, please consider supporting WHAV. There are options here, such as a no credit card “Bill Me” plan. Looking for something more custom, just call 978-374-1900, ext. 450. Thank you!
