Today’s Obituaries—March 16: Bilodeau, Goldsmith

Kenneth Joseph Bilodeau, 86, of Merrimac, died March 13, at his home surrounded by his family. Born in Haverhill, in 1951 at the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Army, completed basic training and deployed to the Korean War, returning to Massachusetts in 1953. Rus Chaput of Haverhill, a childhood friend, recalled sailing home on the same ship as “Umpie.” The passage took two weeks and they celebrated New Year’s Eve twice that year, as the ship crossed the International Date Line. After nearly six decades of working for many precast concrete companies, he raised vegetables in his garden and leased lots, donating to local food pantries every week. He was a commander of the Haverhill Korean War Veterans Association, Chapter 294 from 2004 to 2006. He enjoyed his favorite annual event, the Haverhill Santa Parade, recruiting his children and grandchildren lead the parade with him to throw candy. Funeral services, under the direction of Paul C. Rogers Funeral Homes, will be held privately.

Bernice M. (Krysiak) Goldsmith, 100, of Haverhill, died Wednesday, March 11, at Hannah Duston Healthcare Center, Haverhill. She taught English as a second language in Everett and was often cited for her contributions to the program. At the request of the family, services will be private with interment in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Lowell. Arrangements are by H.L. Farmer and Sons Funeral Homes, Bradford and Haverhill.
