Northern Essex Community College is closing both its Haverhill and Lawrence campuses immediately after officials learned a student may have come into contact with a person infected by coronavirus disease.

Officials cautioned there is “no confirmed case” of anyone actually being sick with what its being called COVID-19. They said a student may have come into contact with a “presumptive case.”  The college cancelled all classes at 11 a.m., and said in what it called a “yellow alert” that the campuses will remain closed until at least next Monday.

The closure also affects all classes on satellite and instructional centers. Northern Essex will review the situation and announce before 8 a.m., next Monday, whether campuses will remain closed.

The college also cancelled “out of an abundance of caution,” its Haverhill health and wellness fair, scheduled for Monday, March 23, and its spring open house on the Lawrence campus, planned for Saturday, March 28.
