State Committee Contests Put Local Names on Presidential Primary Ballots Today

Although today’s Democratic and Republican presidential primary ballots show the major contenders for the White House, some familiar local names will also be seen.

Both the state Democratic and Republican parties are choosing committee members, but only the Republican party locally faces ballot competition. Incumbent Republican State Committeeman Shaun P. Toohey faces opposition from Michael J. Grammont of Haverhill, Ryan A. Hawkes of North Andover, Jack A. Roy and Alexander R. Veras, both of Haverhill.

Toohey, a former Haverhill School Committee member, is joined by his sister-in-law, Haverhill School Committee member Maura Ryan-Ciardiello, who is running for re-election as state committee woman. She is opposed by Jeri Ann Levasseur of Haverhill.

On the Democratic side, Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini is seeking re-election unopposed as Democratic state committeeman for the First Essex District. Louise C. Bevilacqua is also unopposed for state committeewoman.

Voting takes place between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.
