Haverhill Police will soon be selling a commemorative patch to honor slain Provo, Utah, Master Officer Joseph Shinners—brother of Detective Michael Shinners.
Proceeds from sale of the special patch benefit the 250-mile Police Unity Tour and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Haverhill Police will again ride bicycles in the Unity Tour May 8-14, from New Jersey to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. The annual event raises awareness about those officers who have died in the line of duty.
On Monday, Haverhill Sgt. Nicholas Brown, Patrolman Jason Pearl and Dispatcher Robert Saitow presented Detective Michael Shinners with the special patch.
Joseph Shinners was the first officer killed in the line of duty in January 2019. A three-year veteran of the Provo, Utah police force, Joseph Shinners died trying to apprehend a fugitive suspect during a shootout in Orem, Utah, his department said. He was able to return fire and strike the suspect at least once during the altercation south of Salt Lake City.
