Today’s Obituaries—Jan. 6: Belete, Crossman, Duma, Peabody

Victor Manuel Belete, 85, of Haverhill, born in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, died Jan. 2, while in hospice care at Wingate Rehab in Haverhill, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born and raised in Santiago during the Trujillo dictatorship and was in military service in the capital Santo Domingo during the Trujillo assassination and ensuing civil war and U.S. occupation of the 1960s. He immigrated to the United States in the late 60s due to the harsh economic realities in the Dominican Republic as a result of the decade’s political upheavals. Visitation is Tuesday, Jan. 7at Driscoll Funeral Home, 309 S. Main St., Haverhill from 4-8 p.m.

Raymond H. “Ray” Crossman, 82, of Bradford, died Saturday, Jan. 4, after a period of declining health. Born in Merrimac, he was raised and educated in Merrimac where he attended the local high school and was a member of the basketball team. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1956, and served honorably as a radio operator until 1964, and was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal. He worked for many years as an IT Specialist for Honeywell in Lawrence, and Merrimack College in North Andover, and upon retirement, worked in the mail room at the IRS in Andover. Calling hours are Wednesday, Jan. 8, from 3-5:45 p.m., at Brookside Chapel and Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, N.H. His funeral service follows at 6 p.m. in the funeral home and concludes with the rendering of Military Honors by the U.S. Navy.

Stanley Duma, 88, a native and lifelong resident of Haverhill, and formerly of Arch Street, died Friday, Jan. 3, at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen. He attended Tilton School and graduated from Saint James High School, Haverhill, and St. Bonaventure College in New York. Duma worked for many years in the local shoe industry, several of those years at Karelis Wood Heel Co. He was later employed at Gare Ceramics for several years until his retirement. His funeral begins at 9 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 8, from Berube-Comeau Funeral Home, 47 Broadway, Haverhill, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in All Saints Church, 120 Bellevue Ave., Haverhill. Burial will follow in Saint Patrick’s Cemetery.

Nancy L. (Hanscom) Peabody, 77, of Atkinson, N.H., and formerly of Haverhill, died Jan. 3, at Lawrence General Hospital with her family by her side. Raised and educated in Haverhill, she attended St. James Grammar School and St. James High School, graduating with the class of 1960. She was a Union Rep in the Mini Oscillator Room at Lucent Technologies for 22 years.  Calling hours are Tuesday, Jan. 7 from 4-7 p.m., at Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St., Haverhill. Funeral services begin Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. James Church, Winter Street, Haverhill at 10. Burial follows in St. James Cemetery, Primrose Street, Haverhill.
