Heav’nly Donuts owner Patroklos “Pat” Saragas is AHEPA Acropolis Chapter 39’s Man of the Year for 2019.

Saragas was named Man of the Year for depicting the ideals of AHEPA through his longstanding and generous support of local institutions. He was presented with an engraved plaque by AHEPA President James Tzitzon.

“Pat, this year’s recipient, was an easy choice and, honestly, the award was long overdue. Pat has supported the chapter time and again, and very quietly donated repeatedly to other local organizations without much fanfare,” Tzitzon said.

Tzitzon joked, “We finally got to present Pat with this award.” He explained the honor was originally scheduled earlier in the year, but due to conflicts on both the chapter and his part, the award presentation was delayed.”

State Sen. Diana DiZoglio also presented Saragas with a special state citation.

AHEPA Acropolis Chapter 39 of Haverhill formed in January 1924. It is a chapter of the largest Greek-American association in the world which has chapters in the United States, Canada, Greece and Cyprus, and sister chapters in Australia and New Zealand. The international organization was founded in 1922 by visionary Greek Americans to protect Hellenes from prejudice originating from the KKK. In its history, AHEPA joined with the NAACP and B’nai B’rith International to fight discrimination.

Today’s membership continues the traditions of earlier members by raising money and giving back to the community. This past year, once again 10 scholarships were issued to high school graduates and college students. The chapter also donated to the American Legion, Disabled Veterans, the Wounded Warrior “Hunt 4 Freedom” effort and the Vietnam Memorial Fund, all of Greater Haverhill.
