Winnekenni Park is expected to benefit from a new sidewalk connection as the state moves ahead with the planned $2.1 million reconfiguration of Newton Road’s intersection with Kenoza Avenue and Amesbury Road.

Newton Road is the start of Route 108, beginning at Route 110. According to the state Department of Transportation, the intersection will be realigned to an angle allowing improved truck movements. Besides the sidewalk connection across the street, a currently paved area will be converted to grass, a dedicated turn lane will be added on Route 110 and sidewalks and dedicated bicycle lanes will be installed.

Construction is scheduled to begin during the spring of 2022. The federal government will pay $1.7 million of the project with the state picking up the remaining cost.

A public hearing takes place Thursday, Jan. 16, 7 p.m., in the Theodore A. Pelosi Jr. City Council Chambers in City Hall.
