Today’s Obituaries—Dec. 19: Brown, Kopel, Schena

Ellen Vera (Noone) Brown, 78, of Haverhill, died Sunday morning, Dec. 15, at Penacook Place Nursing Home, Haverhill. Educated in the Haverhill school system, she graduated from Haverhill High School and earned her LPN from Tewksbury Nursing School. Her memorial service is Saturday afternoon, Dec. 28, 2 p.m., in Kingdom hall of Jehovah’s Witness, 410 Water St., Haverhill. Arrangements are by the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Homes, Haverhill and Bradford.

Janet L. (Kapp) Kopel, 91, of Haverhill, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, at Wingate at Haverhill. She graduated from Haverhill High School, class of 1946; Radcliffe College receiving her bachelor’s in Psychology/Social Sciences in 1950; and Simmons College Graduate School of Social Work (1952) where she received her master’s in social work and where she met Ken Kopel, her husband of 59 years until Ken’s passing in 2011. She worked in a few local mental health agencies, served for years in Haverhill’s Title One program, consulted to some area schools, and in her latter years worked in private practice. Her funeral is Friday, Dec. 20, 1:30 p.m., at Temple Emanu-El, 514 Main St., Haverhill. Interment follows in the Children of Israel Cemetery, Middle Road. Haverhill.

Gerard M. Schena, 63, of Plaistow, N.H., and formerly of Haverhill, died Dec. 16, at Lahey Clinic Hospital in Burlington with his family by his side. Born in Haverhill, he was the son of the late Vincent J. and Margaret (Bresnahan) Schena. He was raised and educated in Haverhill. Schena was self-employed and the owner of Gerard Schena and Son Contractors. Calling hours are Sunday, Dec. 22, from 1-3 p.m., at Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St., Haverhill. A celebration of his life takes place following calling hours in the funeral home at 3 p.m.
