The Haverhill School Committee began Thursday night’s meeting by recognizing the YMCA Educator of the Year.

Neil Wilkins, a science and arts teacher at Greenleaf Academy, formerly known as the Haverhill Alternative School, was selected from 23 Haverhill school teachers nominated to receive the award.

Greenleaf Academy Principal John V. DePolo read from a nomination letter he had submitted to the selection committee, endorsing Wilkins for that award.

“Some of the greatest teachers are the ones who show the most generosity for their students.  Neil Wilkins shows this through the constant effort that he puts into his teaching both in science and art.”

DePolo also noted Wilkins’ efforts outside of school, working with disadvantaged children.

He was also honored with a serenade by High School student Abby Gomes who performed an acapella version of John Lennon’s song “Imagine.”
