A Haverhill juvenile is expected to be arraigned today in Lawrence juvenile court after being charged with stabbing a man outside of a Friday night basketball game at Haverhill High School.
The unidentified victim received what were described as “non-life-threatening injuries,” treated at the scene by first responders and then taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
Police said a Haverhill juvenile was arrested on a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon—a knife. Officers responded about 7:15 p.m. after receiving a call about “a man who had been stabbed outside of the gym.”
Haverhill School Superintendent Margaret Marotta confirmed what she called the “act of violence.”
She said, “The injured party was alert and mobile and went to the hospital via ambulance. The suspect fled and was apprehended by police off campus.” She said there was a heavy police presence at the school to “assure a safe and orderly dismissal from the game.”
In an email to School Committee members Friday night, Marotta said high school Principal Glen Burns was at the school and 911 was called.
Haverhill Police remained on scene and the game finished without further incident.
