A change in timing of traffic lights along South Main Street or other options to alleviate traffic congestion will be presented by city Councilor Melinda E. Barrett when the Haverhill City Council meets Tuesday night.
Barrett told WHAV increased traffic has been raised by business owners and residents alike on the portion of Route 125 that runs through Bradford. She believes commuters may be using the street as traffic backs up along I-495 northbound because of continuing bridge construction.
“I don’t know if it because of the bridge being closed or narrowed, but I think it has an effect. We can send a letter to the state to adjust our traffic lights going through town. It’s always been an issue since south Main Street was reconstructed seven or eight years ago.”
Also, on the agenda, City Councilor Joseph J. Bevilacqua is proposing to remove the additional $3,000 stipend granted to the City Council president. Bevilacqua has been vying to become City Council president since he became the top vote recipient following last month’s city election. His proposal last week to change the order of voting to have the president vote first instead of last did not advance when no other councilor supported the plan.
City councilors are paid $15,000 annually and the council president receives an extra $3,000.
