Getting ready for the national decennial census, a job fair takes place this Saturday at Consentino School, with about 300 temporary jobs starting at $25 per hour.

Mayor James J. Fiorentini said Monday he is hosting the U.S. Census 2020 Job fair this Saturday, Dec. 14, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at Consentino School, 685 Washington St. Most of the available positions are for census takers, known as enumerators, who would work in Haverhill starting in the spring and canvas local neighborhoods. Main duties include contacting people who have not responded to initial requests for Census information.

Census officials are also seeking recruiting assistants, office staff and supervisors who could begin working sooner. Census jobs offer flexible hours, paid training and travel reimbursement. Applicants must be at least 18 by the time they start working.

“There are options to work days, nights and/or weekends,” Fiorentini said. “And, even if you only work a few hours or days, it looks great on a resume to say you worked for the federal government.”

Census officials have so far hired 199 people for 481 positions they need in Haverhill, leaving 282 positions unfilled. Applicants at Saturday’s job fair will fill out applications online with the help of Census officials.

The census, required by the U.S. Constitution, first took place in 1790. Fiorentini explained the importance of the Census.

“The census helps determine our representatives in Congress as well as how much state and local funding we get for schools, hospitals, roads and much more,” he said.

Nationwide, the U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting to fill hundreds of thousands of positions to assist with the 2020 Census count, which determines allocation of federal funds each of the next 10 years.
