The Voice Behind ‘Pizza, Pizza’ and Bluto Hires Johnny Dollar Sunday Night

Jackson Beck.

You’ve heard his voice.

Mason Adams.

If you’ve ever watched the old Popeye cartoons, he was the voice of Popeye’s nemesis, Bluto. If not, you’ve likely at least heard him say “Pizza, Pizza” on Little Caesars Pizza commercials. Jackson Beck worked almost up to his death at age 92 in 2004 as a prolific voiceover announcer on radio and television.

He was the announcer on radio’s and the 1960s animated series, “The Adventures of Superman.” On Sunday night at 10 (repeated three hours later at 1 a.m.), you’ll hear him play Frank Francis of Tri-Western Life Insurance on “Yours Truly Johnny Dollar.” In the same episode, you’ll hear another famous voice actor, Mason Adams, as Simple Simon. Adams played Managing Editor Charlie Hume on the televisions series “Lou Grant” and was also heard on Smucker’s commercials, saying “With a name like Smucker’s, it has to be good.”
