Tacos, tequila and whiskey are coming to the downtown Haverhill riverfront next year.

Barrio, the Cleveland, Ohio-based restaurant chain, is coming to Harbor Place at the edge of the Merrimack River. Owners Maggie and Dan Osborn of Atkinson, N.H., have started construction inside a 4,000-square-foot space long set-aside for dining space at the 2 Merrimack St. commercial building.

“We couldn’t have found better partners in Dan and Maggie and a better restaurant for our waterfront space at Harbor Place,” said Ronald Trombley, managing director with the Greater Haverhill Foundation. “We have been looking for the right people who understand the importance of community and beautiful design.” His sentiment was echoed by development partner, the Archdiocese’s Planning Office for Urban Affairs.

Bill Grogan, president of the Planning Office, said “We are committed to helping our communities flourish and thrive, especially when it comes to our local business owners. We’re looking forward to welcoming the Barrio restaurant to Harbor Place so people can come and experience Haverhill’s downtown waterfront area!”

Haverhill is the chain’s second New England location. Last year, Barrio was named winner of the elite “Best of Taste Award” at its Portsmouth, N.H., restaurant.

Dougan Sherwood, president of the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce, said the Osborns chose Haverhill for its diversity. “Barrio is Spanish for neighborhood and this is a restaurant that’s all about community.”

Groundbreaking for the five-story Harbor Place, which replaced the former Woolworth’s, took place during the summer of 2014. It was formally dedicated two years ago during a ceremony attended by Mayor James J. Fiorentini, Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley and state Housing and Economic Development Secretary Jay Ash.
