At Haverhill’s John Greenleaf Whittier Middle School, kindness and compassion is cool! Two months into the school year, students at the Concord Street campus have engaged in a series of challenges to compete against one another in a friendly game to see which grade can come out on top in the school’s “good citizenship program,” acting principal Timothy Betty tells WHAV.
For the month of September, sixth graders triumphed when it came to the theme of responsibility, earning the most points in challenges related to weekly attendance, among other tasks related to getting to school consistently, Betty said. As a result of the grade earning the most points, students were able to enjoy a game of Capture the Flag outside the school to celebrate their accomplishment.
In October, students are focused on wellness, Betty said.
The program is now in its sixth year at the school.
