A Haverhill man police say is responsible for nine city car breaks and was recently brought up on charges for 35 breaks in Tewksbury is headed to a 28-day court-ordered detox program.

Keegen MacRae faced Haverhill District Court Judge Stephen Abany this week, where he was ordered held without bail and sent to the rehabilitation program. MacRae’s punishment comes two months after he allegedly broke into cars on Germain Avenue, South Cogswell and South New Streets.

An investigation by Haverhill Police Det. James Cotreau into the crimes allegedly committed by MacRae found that the 24-year-old, said to be homeless at the time of his Aug. 28 arrest, stole items including credit cards and cash from unlocked cars before being identified through surveillance footage. According to Cotreau, MacRae—known to Haverhill’s detective bureau for his “extensive criminal record”—was spotted on video footage wearing a hooded sweatshirt around his face attempting to enter cars on Germain Avenue shortly before his arrest.

In June, surveillance footage also led Tewksbury Police to MacRae, resulting in his arrest for 35 counts of breaking and entering into a motor vehicle and 20 counts of larceny, among other offenses. He was also found to be in possession of a double-edged machete and possession of gabapentin, police said.

MacRae next appears in court on the Haverhill charges in early November.
