Methuen’s Rep. Linda Dean Campbell is lending her support to Ed Markey in his bid for re-election to the United States Senate, calling him the leader among elected officials when it comes to environmental issues.

Serving as a member of the U.S. Senate since 2013, Markey has proved a pivotal voice for Merrimack Valley climate change efforts, Campbell says in her endorsement, issued this week.

“We need his leadership now, more than ever, to combat climate change,” Campbell said. “On a local level, it has been a privilege to work with him on the need for more federal investment in infrastructure to eliminate combined sewer overflows into the Merrimack River, and also to ensure we have needed federal assets here in the Merrimack Valley to combat drug trafficking.”

Last week, 2020 Senate challenger Joe Kennedy agreed to take part in a climate debate proposed by Sen. Markey as part of the Democratic primary. Kennedy, the grandson of former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, launched his primary challenge campaign against Markey in September.
