Haverhill has 500 new junior firefighters ready and willing to help their families in the event of an emergency after the city’s Exchange Club teamed with the Haverhill Fire Department to swear them in during a fire safety education day last week at Sacred Hearts School.

Joining Fire Chief William F. Laliberty and members of the Haverhill Fire Department to offer safety tips to the city’s kindergartners was none other than Sparky the Fire Dog—also known as Water Street Firefighter Tim Nutter—who helped hand out coloring books and fire hats to the new recruits.

In addition to taking a Junior Firefighter oath from Laliberty, students had the opportunity to get up close and personal with a fire truck and Trinity EMS ambulance. Firefighters also guided children through a smoke-filled trailer while teaching them what to do in the event of a fire.

The Exchange Club’s Jennifer Cantwell tells WHAV the event was made possible through the Club’s partnership with North Reading Transportation, Trinity EMS and the Haverhill Police Department, including Officer Paul Malone.
