Stephen Stanley “Steve” Wersoski Jr., 70; Vietnam Veteran, Haverhill Highway Asst. Supt.

Stephen Stanley “Steve” Wersoski, Jr.

(Paid obituary)

Stephen Stanley (“Steve”) Wersoski, Jr., 70, of Haverhill, Massachusetts died September 10, 2019 from complications of gall bladder surgery. Son of the late Stephen Wersoski, a professional boxer and Massachusetts state trooper, Steve got his baby blue eyes from his late mother Vera (Fuller) Wersoski. After attending Haverhill Trade School, Steve enlisted in the U.S. Army and served two tours of duty in Vietnam, then returned home to work in the Haverhill Highway Department for almost 40 years until he retired as Assistant Superintendent.

Joyfully antiquing with his wife Debra, Steve was a talented collector whose eclectic style and creative eye produced a home filled with beautiful and unique treasures.

An accomplished Italian cook who learned how to roll pasta from his great aunts (daughters of the first Italian immigrants to Haverhill), he also baked delights like cookies, pies, and his unreal brownies.

Steve spoke of favorite memories with his children: fishing on Big Island pond and watching daughter Christine figure skate and son Stevie defend the puck. Boxing and cigars were grown-up passions, and he enjoyed pay-per-view fights with Stevie and football with everyone.

Most recent adventures centered on kayaking local ponds with Debra.

Steve’s wit and wisdom had a powerful, endearing effect on family and friends. Generous, gentle, protective, intensely loyal, and proud of his family, he was an adoring husband and father.

Debra, Christine, Stevie, and his devoted niece Robin with her husband David never left his side as he fought illness much the same as fighters battle in the ring: with power, grace, strength, and endurance.

Steve is survived by his loving wife Debra Ann (Hughes) Wersoski; son Stephen (“Stevie”) and daughter-in-law Chiara (Chiacchio); daughter Christine and son-in-law Mark Mazzaglia; step-children Ryan Hughes and Emily (Hughes) Barbosa; loving grandchildren Victoria Wersoski, Alexandra Wersoski, Kaelyn Mazzaglia, Mark Mazzaglia, Joseph Hughes, Bella Hughes, Vincent Barbosa, Carlo Barbosa, and Sophia Barbosa; in-laws Victor Legault, Sheila Landers and her husband Mark, Marcy Boucher and her husband Peter, Billy Rand, Pat Rand, Joe Yuele and his wife Patty; his children’s mother Marie (Yuele) Wersoski; and many nieces and nephews.

Steve was predeceased by his beloved sister Sheila (Legault) Wersoski and dearest cousin John (“Jack”) Casey, childhood companions and lifelong friends.
