The body of a deceased male was found in the water at Methuen’s Nevins Bird Sanctuary at noon Sunday, Police Chief Joseph E. Solomon told WHAV, though foul play is not suspected in the man’s death.

An autopsy will be performed on the body to provide more details on how and when the man died, Solomon said. His identity is being withheld until that time.

Two people walking on the trail Sunday afternoon found the body and went to the nearby Methuen police station to report the discovery in person. Given the proximity to the sanctuary, local police captains secured the scene within 20 minutes while they waited for state police to arrive and remove the body.

Massachusetts State Police detectives, a dive team and members of the Methuen Fire Department assisted with the case, Solomon said.
