Four local nonprofits were recently awarded grants by the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association Haverhill Foundation.

Known as AHEPA, the group presented checks to Community Action’s Fox Center; Groveland’s Nathan M. Webster American Legion, Post 248; Haverhill Historical Society’s Buttonwoods Museum; and 97.9 WHAV FM. James Tzitzon, president of AHEPA Acropolis Chapter 39 explains the annual grant program.

“The whole purpose is to provide the community—those organizations who apply for it—some well-needed money,” he said.

He explained the money comes from the National AHEPA Housing Corporation as a way of sending money back to communities hosting affordable elderly housing. The organization has 95 apartment complexes in 21 states, including AHEPA 39 apartments, a 54-unit building on the site of the former Hale Hospital, 40 Buttonwoods Ave.

Grants were presented by Dr. Byron Chopas, AHEPA Foundation president. The Foundation has been awarding local grants since the mid-1990s.

Community Action, represented by Executive Director John Cuneo, plans to use the money to support its early childhood education program. Nathan M. Webster American Legion, Post 248, represented by Commander David Tuttle expects to purchase audio equipment, and WHAV, represented by President Tim Coco, will use the grant to support local news coverage.
