The city came together Monday to remember Haverhill’s war dead on May 27’s Memorial Day holiday, with the annual parade and ceremony held at Linwood Cemetery.

Mayor James J. Fiorentini joined members of Haverhill’s City Council, state Rep. Andy Vargas, Sen. Diana DiZoglio, Haverhill Veterans’ Services Director Amanda Buckley and VFW Post 29 to offer remarks and words of support to surviving veterans Monday.

“We’re here today not to honor war but to honor peace and those who fought for it,” Fiorentini said. “For all those who fought in war so there would be peace, and those who served in peace so there would be no more wars.”

Also during Monday’s ceremony, students from Haverhill High School and Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School read traditional proclamations including the Gettysburg Address, while the Sons of Italy Drum and Bugle Corps provided music.
