This Week’s Radio Drama: Great Gildersleeve’s Birdie Makes a Decision

Lillian Randolph, who plays character Birdie, moves to center stage on this Wednesday’s “Great Gildersleeve.” Randolph, a star of screen, stage, radio and television going back to the 1930s, is most often recognized for her role alongside Jimmy Stewart in the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Her final big screen project was “The Onion Field” in 1979.

In 1954, she became the first African-American on the board of the Hollywood chapter of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Randolph played Bill Cosby’s mother in 1969 on “The Bill Cosby Show.” She also appeared on “Sanford and Son” and “The Jeffersons” on television.

“The Great Gildersleeve” is heard Wednesday night at 10, with an encore performance at 1 a.m., over 97.9 WHAV FM.
