One week into the fall municipal election season, several newcomers have pulled nomination papers in bids for one of nine open City Council seats. The latest to announce intentions to run include former Brightside president Douglas Edison and paralegal advocate Joseph Sherlock.
Sherlock, a Haverhill native who lives at 92 Agawam Ave., took out his nomination papers on May 2, while 28 Towne Hill Road’s Edison followed suit on May 3.
The men join previously announced candidates Stavros Dimakis, Nicholas Golden, Ken Quimby and Fred Simmons. Incumbents Joseph J. Bevilacqua and John A. Michitson, the current City Council President, have also kicked off their re-election campaigns.
In the race for mayor, newcomers Hector Montalvo, Melanie Tamberino and Daniel Trocki all hope to unseat the city’s longest-serving mayor James J. Fiorentini.
A preliminary election is expected to take place in September assuming that all candidates obtain the necessary 50 certified signatures before July 1 to appear on the ballot.
On the School Committee side of the ballot, incumbent Gail M. Sullivan and newcomer Thomas Grannemann are hoping to sit on the education panel next year, the City Clerk’s office confirmed.
