Haverhill is among 123 school districts across the Commonwealth to share in more than $7.5 million in grant money to fund mental and physical health services in schools, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health said this week.

Haverhill’s four-year grant is in the amount of $270,000 and was awarded based on student enrollment and community need.

“All the evidence points to the fact that children can’t learn if they are not healthy,” Health and Human Services Secretary Marylou Sudders said of the award. “This funding will support our efforts to keep students healthy, in school, and prepared to learn.”

In addition to funding school health programs and personnel, are intended to support community partnerships and awareness of substance abuse and chronic health conditions.

Andover, Boxford, Methuen and North Andover are among the other local towns poised to benefit from the grant money that ranged from $3,000 to $250,000 annually with three, 2-year options to renew, the DPH said.
