An eighth-grade social studies teacher was elected head of the Haverhill Education Association Thursday as contract talks continue between the union and city.
Anthony J. Parolisi, who teaches at Dr. Albert B. Consentino School takes over as union president July 1. He succeeds Ted Kempinski. Addressing the School Committee last Thursday night, he said both union interests and school needs depend on the mayor’s proposed school budget.
“We’re looking to fund our future. We’re looking to provide for our kids the things that our parents and students need for their child’s education and we hope to have your support and look forward to hearing the budget,” he said.
Parolisi joined union members in wearing red shirts emblazoned with the words, “Educators are the HEArt of Haverhill.” Handheld signs repeated the message and another read, “Let’s Spend $$ on Education.”
Besides teachers, the union also represents education support personnel and other education professionals. Parolisi currently serves as first vice president of the association.
In a message to his colleagues, Parolisi thanked Kempinski for his service.
“Ted’s leadership and voice was an essential part of our recent successes and should not be overlooked or go unrecognized. I hope that all members will join me in extending an expression of gratitude for his willingness to step into the role and advocate successfully for so many policies that are important to our Association.”
