Laura ‘Betty’ Quigley, 91, Local Nurse

(Paid obituary)

Laura Elizabeth “Betty” Quigley passed away peacefully, Thursday, April 25, 2019 at Penacook Place in Haverhill MA. She was the beloved wife of the late Bernard J. Quigley and a devoted mother to her eight children.

Betty was born in Haverhill, MA on May 11,1927. She was the daughter of the late Arthur Cross and Grace (Parker) Cross. Betty remained a life-long resident of Haverhill and devoted her life to serving and nurturing others. She cherished her life’s work caring for her family and later, for her patients, when she became a Licensed Practical Nurse, a career she valued and one to which she felt privileged to hold. She was a respected and compassionate nurse and worked many years at Hale Hospital, now known as the Merrimack Valley Hospital.

Betty’s greatest joy was her family and cultivating a home for her 8 children and eventually for her 18 grandchildren. Alongside her husband Bernard, they convened this growing group for Sunday dinners and holidays and always relished in the sweet noises of clanging plates, children’s laughter and the music that would undoubtedly surface – at the piano, on a harmonica, or a simple sing-along. She was an accomplished seamstress. She gardened, canned and baked pies. She loved to play Bingo and found respite and peace from the New England winters with her husband in Florida. And she never missed a Red Sox game. She lived a wonderful and full life, was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.

Betty is survived by her eight children. Nancy Hecht of Ipswich, MA, Dr. Susan Duggan and her husband Francis of Fayette, MO, Thomas Quigley and wife Susan of Ogunquit, ME, Dr. Dianne Quigley of Foxboro, MA, Dr. Bernard Quigley and wife Gwen Winston of Newburgh, ME, Kathryn Quigley of Amesbury, MA, Paul Quigley and wife Deborah of Raynham, MA and Jennifer Gariepy and husband Robert Jr. of Amesbury, MA. She also leaves behind her 18 grandchildren and 8 great grands, a sister Maryrose Dergay, two brothers, Raymond Cross and John Cross, several nieces and nephews and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her sisters, Constance Rose and Dorothy Hayward and a brother, Dr. Robert Cross.

The Quigley Family would like to share their deep gratitude to the staff of Penacook Place of Haverhill, MA and the Merrimack Valley Hospice team for their loving and dedicated care of Betty Quigley.
