A 15-year-old Haverhill High School sophomore expects to release her own book of poetry and prose later this year, described as, what she calls, “a mixture of love, pain, life changes, lessons, social justice and equality.”

Gabriela Vargas’ book, “The Rhymes of These Times,” has been accepted for publication by Haverhill House Publishing. She says the topics are personal.

“This book is just the experiences I have gone through in my life as a young woman and high schooler. In short, this book is me opening myself up to the world without a shield,” she says.

Vargas, who describes herself as a Dominican-American, heaps praise on her family, saying, “I get my writing skills and love for community service from my father. He is an amazing man with lots to say and even has his own missionary down in the Dominican Republic. From my mother and grandmothers, I get the ambition, strength and hard work.”

When she’s not writing, she says, she enjoys community service, dancing and her family.

The book is expected to be go on sale in either August or September. Haverhill House Publishing is operated by John M. McIlveen of Haverhill.

“Gabriela has submitted a wonderful collection that is current, personal, and honest, which will speak to readers of all ages,” McIlveen said.
