Haverhill has two brand-new recruits headed to fight fires in the city: Evan Kelleher and Robert Miles, who graduated from the state’s firefighting academy Friday.

The men are among 36 firefighters from 23 departments going to work across the state after completing the 50-day program under the direction of State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey. Retired Wrentham Deputy Fire Chief David Wiklund, also an academy instructor, addressed graduates during Friday’s ceremony at the Department of Fire Services in Stow.

Training for Kelleher and Miles included search and rescue, ladder operations and fire attack skills, among other life-saving behaviors. The Massachusetts Fire Training Council also named them certified hazardous materials first responders.

Kelleher and Miles join Haverhill’s other rookie firefighters, Christian Dion and Gregory Ryan, who completed training last fall. Haverhill Fire Chief William F. Laliberty tells WHAV all recruits work out of the Water Street station.
