Sixty-two one-, two- and three-bedroom housing units are on the way to downtown Haverhill in winter 2020, with residents interested in moving into 98 Essex St. able to enter a housing lottery now through May 9.

Units in the former Chen Building are still under construction, with property manager Peabody Properties confirming the mix of affordable and market-rate housing run from $890 to $1,260 for a one-bedroom. The top tier price for a three-bedroom apartment is $1,520. Heat, hot water and air conditioning are included in all units.

In announcing the housing lottery Friday, Mayor James J. Fiorentini said he considers the project the latest win for the city’s downtown historic district.

“Dilapidated and abandoned for decades, the Chen Building is one of the last remnants of the downtown shoe district,” Fiorentini said of the space that once housed Shoe and Leather Associates. “I am very pleased to see it being remade into 62 units of modern housing for young working professional and families. It’s another great addition to Haverhill’s downtown renaissance.”

An information session about the 98 Essex St. project and housing lottery takes place Tuesday, March 26, with the actual lottery happening May 16. Both sessions are held at The Hayes at Railroad Square, 14 Granite St. Prospective tenants may pick up lottery applications in person at The Hayes or call 978-702-4237.
