A Lawrence police officer, accused of raping a 13-year-old boy he met online, was arrested today in Haverhill.

Carlos Vieira, 49, of Lawrence, was arrested by Massachusetts State Police without incident. He was charged with two counts of aggravated rape of a child and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 following a month-long investigation by the Essex County District Attorney’s office, according to Carrie Kimball, spokeswoman for District Attorney Jonathan W. Blodgett.

“The investigation was launched in January when the victim’s mother contacted the Essex District Attorney’s office reporting that her son, who was 13 at the time, had allegedly met the defendant using a social media app and engaged in sexual activity with him in the summer of 2018,” a statement said.

State Police detectives assigned to the DA’s office made the arrest.

Vieira, who was placed on administrative leave by the Lawrence Police Department, is expected to be arraigned tomorrow in Lawrence District Court.
