As local and state police continue to investigate the circumstances that led to Haverhill pedestrian Charles Burrill’s Friday death, the 59-year-old’s coworkers are mourning the man they call a “deeply valued” member of the Anna Jaques Hospital community.

Employed for the last 18 years as a custodian at the Newburyport hospital, Burrill—nicknamed “Chucky”—was “well-known” to staff, Anna Jaques President and CEO Mark L. Goldstein told WHAV.

“Our hospital community is devastated….Chuck was a well-known and deeply valued member of our staff,” Goldstein said in a statement Friday. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Chuck’s family—and his AJH housekeeping family—during this very sad time.”

In an obituary released by the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, Burrill’s family remembered him as a talented artist with a great sense of humor. Burrill’s family said he was known to walk around Haverhill, preferring to walk even when offered a ride.

“He was loved by all who knew him and all who worked with him,” his family said.

As WHAV previously reported, Burrill was killed early Friday morning after being struck at 5:14 a.m. near Main and Water Streets near the city’s busy Central Plaza shopping area. Though the Essex County District Attorney’s office investigating the accident declined to release surveillance footage, a silver PT Cruiser wanted in connection with the incident was said to be impounded by Haverhill Police Friday.
