Downtown Haverhill’s revitalization continues this spring with the opening of the revamped former Ted’s Leather Goods building on Essex Street. Designed and constructed by Newmarket, N.H.-based Chinburg Properties, the 59,000 square foot property features 59 apartments—studios, one- and two-bedrooms—along with commercial space currently available for rent.
As the company’s Vice President of Marketing Jennifer Chinburg tells WHAV, the space is currently attracting attention from locals eager to move into their first apartment and live in a compact space that carries what Chinburg calls a “reasonable” price point. Known as The Ellis Factory, 24 Essex St., features units priced from $1,035/month for a studio to $2,015 for a two-bedroom.
Nearly 30 units are already rented, Chinburg told WHAV during a recent exclusive tour of the space. Updated availability is listed on the company’s website, chinburg.com.
The Ted’s Leather renovation is one of several Chinburg have completed across the Merrimack Valley, New Hampshire seacoast and southern Maine. Maintaining the original mill architecture—including exposed brick and beam—was of paramount importance to Chinburg.
“We really like to keep the integrity while making it comfortable for modern living,” she told WHAV. “That’s why we do what we do: We love these old mill properties and that we can refurbish them after they were once abandoned and see new businesses coming in.”
Several items original to Ted’s Leather are being incorporated, Project Manager Tom Farrell said. The group worked alongside Ipswich’s Essex Preservation consultants to create a space that stayed true to the building’s historical heritage.
Updates like energy efficient Kitchen Aid appliances and leathered granite countertops modernize the space, explains Property Manager Danielle Esjunin. Construction of an outdoor courtyard space and club room are also planned before the property’s March 1 opening. As for parking, 68 spaces have been allocated in the nearby MVRTA parking garage, with one parking pass issued per bedroom.
