Joan D. (Boulanger) Mazza, 85, Seamstress for Hooker and Howe Costume Company

Joan D. (Boulanger) Mazza, 85, a longtime Haverhill resident, died Saturday afternoon, Dec. 29 at Holy Family Hospital at Merrimack Valley, Haverhill, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Georgetown on March 24, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Leon P. and Doris K. (Moran) Boulanger and was a graduate of Perley High School in Georgetown with the class of 1952.

As an accomplished seamstress and costume designer, Mazza worked at the former Hooker and Howe Company in Haverhill, manufacturing theatrical costumes sold throughout the area and beyond. Additionally, Mazza was an avid quilter, having made numerous quilts for family and friends, and equally enjoyed beading.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Anthony C. Mazza, who died Dec. 28, 2000, loving son, Stephen A. Mazza, who died April 1, 2004, as well as her stepson, Anthony G. Mazza and her only sister, Lorraine Lanciani.

She leaves behind her only daughter, Leslie-Ann Gould, and her husband William of Haverhill, with whom she made her residence for the past years, her three adoring grandchildren, William J. Gould Jr., Kaitlyn Gould and Sean Mazza, a stepson, James H. Mazza and three nephews, her extended family and her lifelong, dear friend, Sally Bean of Andover.

The family would like to extend a most heartfelt “thank you” to the staff at Holy Family Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill for the dedicated and loving care they provided Mazza.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday, Jan. 2 from 6-8 p.m. at the Monument Square Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 334 Main St., Haverhill. Funeral services at the funeral home will be Thursday, Jan. 3 at 11 a.m. followed by burial at Linwood Cemetery.
