The roofer killed in Tuesday’s construction accident on Essex Street has been identified as Haverhill resident Carlos Ortiz, the Essex County District Attorney’s office tells WHAV. Forty-one-year-old Ortiz was employed by River Street’s Progressive Roofing at the time of his death.

As WHAV previously reported, police responded to 98 Essex St. at 10:20 a.m. for a medical call and discovered Ortiz, who was working on the roof of a nine-story building, had fallen through an opening in the roof. According to the DA’s office, the opening appeared to be an elevator shaft.

OSHA and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ortiz’s sudden death.
