Raymond S. Heffernan, 87, Retired From Lucent

Raymond S. Heffernan, 87, died on Nov. 25 at Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport.

Born Dec. 15, 1930 in Haverhill, he was the son of the late Maurice and Theresa (Shaw) Heffernan. He was raised and educated in the Acre neighborhood of Haverhill and was a graduate of St. James High School with the class of 1948. He served in the United States Army from 1953 until 1955 and was honorably discharged. Upon returning from the Army he attended Merrimack College, obtaining his degree in 1958. Heffernan was employed for many years at the former Western Electric, which became Lucent Technology and he retired in 1993. A man of faith, Heffernan put others needs before his own. He was known as a giving and generous man who will be missed by all who knew and loved him. His nephews appreciate of all the Boston sporting events he took them to when they were young.

Heffernan is survived by his sister, Sara Diette of Lowell; his nephews, Mark Diette of Lowell and Patrick Diette of Westborough; his sister-in-law, Margaret (Tobin) Heffernan of Cinnaminson, N.J.; nieces and nephews Katherine (Heffernan) Parker of Cinnaminson, N.J., Maureen Heffernan of Cinnaminson, N.J., Michael Heffernan of Mount Laurel, N.J., David Heffernan of Mount Laurel, N.J.; his grandnephew Jacob Diette and grandniece Jessica Diette, both of Westborough; and several cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers Edward and Alfred Heffernan and his sister Mary Heffernan.

Services will begin on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 9:30 a.m. at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St., Haverhill with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at the Church of Nativity Holy Redeemer Parish, 4 Green St., Merrimac at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Primrose Street, Haverhill.
