A five-year-old boy and his mother were among those seriously injured after a two-car crash shut down I-93 Friday afternoon in Andover.

First responders were dispatched to I-93 Northbound just prior to River Road at 3:15 p.m. and determined that a vehicle stopped in the breakdown lane was struck by another car that sent it across the highway and into the left lane.

According to a statement from Andover Fire Chief Michael Mansfield, the boy and his mother were in the car stopped in the breakdown lane, and suffered serious injuries as a result of the accident. The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were also injured. All four people were transported to Lawrence General Hospital, with the boy airlifted to Boston for further treatment.

Traffic on the post-Thanksgiving Black Friday was backed up for several miles as debris was cleared from all lanes of the highway. The crash remains under investigation by the State Police.
