Former Haverhill legislator Brian S. Dempsey is branching out on his own. A little over one year after leaving Beacon Hill for a lobbying gig at ML Strategies, Dempsey tells the State House News Service he’s starting his own firm—and taking former colleagues with him.

Called Dempsey, Lucey and Associates, the new consulting firm will be housed on Boston’s Beacon Street. Joining Dempsey is Anna Lucey, who formerly served as Dempsey’s general counsel of the Ways and Means Committee. Lucey leaves her position at Charter Communications to work for Dempsey, the News Service said.

Tatum Mortimer, a former Dempsey aide who most recently served as chief of staff to Needham’s Rep. Denise Garlick, rounds out the team.

Dempsey is starting out strong in his new firm, with clients including Blue Cross Blue Shield among those said to already be on board.

Representing Haverhill in the House of Representatives from 1991-2017, Dempsey left his high-profile post to become ML’s senior vice president and chief operating officer. Succeeded in the House by Rep. Andy Vargas, his Brian S. Dempsey Insurance Agency has been a Haverhill mainstay for over 20 years.
