A man apparently suffered what officials called “a serious hand injury” after being struck by a freight train Tuesday afternoon in Haverhill.

MBTA Police spokesman Richard Sullivan told WHAV the man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital. The man was apparently walking across the tracks when he was struck.

Haverhill Police also confirmed it received a report of a person struck by a train at the Haverhill MBTA rail station.

Capt. Stephen J. Doherty, police spokesman, could not confirm any details since the matter is under investigation by MBTA Transit Police. He did say Haverhill Police went to the station about ten minutes before 4 to find an ambulance was already at the scene.
