Retired Army Lt. General Gardner Discusses Jobs Program for Students Thursday

Retired Army Lt. General John D. Gardner Thursday discusses his program to provide Haverhill public school students with “realistic access” to true living wage jobs.

Gardner, who learned about Haverhill as a senior service fellow at Harvard, speaks at 6 p.m., at Battleground Coffee Co., 39 Washington St., Haverhill, during a program sponsored by the shop and Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce.

Gardner, of Alexandria, Va., was commander of the U.S. Army South where he oversaw American military operations in 31 countries and 13 dependencies in Central and South America and the Caribbean. He is a graduate of West Point and the Army Command and General Staff College. He also holds a master’s from Georgetown, and completed a senior service college fellowship at Harvard.

Chamber President Dougan Sherwood said Gardner has been flying to and from Haverhill for months at his own expense.

Space is limited and the Chamber asks that reservations be emailed to [email protected].
