The Haverhill Hillies varsity football team definitely has their work cut out for them after Friday’s season opener loss against St. John’s Prep 43-14, say WHAV sports commentators Paul Ryan and Tommy Morgan.

Heading to Fred Glatz stadium in Danvers to take on the state’s third-seeded St. John’s Eagles, the Hillies—under the direction of Head Coach Tim O’Connor—faced an uphill battle from the first quarter.

As Morgan recapped during WHAV’s post-game show, a late 87-yard touchdown run on a kickoff return by DJ Cunningham, along with a 53-yard TD run from Hunter Prescott, weren’t enough to save the Hillies.

Led by coach Brian St. Pierre, St. John’s Prep took advantage of three turnovers in the first six minutes of the ballgame.

“It seemed like it was going to be an endless night of fumbles and for the first few minutes, it was,” Morgan reasoned. “You can’t expect to win a football game doing things like that. They definitely have some things they need to grow on, but I thought closing out the game with a few scores were a few positives to take away.”

UP NEXT WEEK: The Hillies are headed to Chelmsford on September 14 to hit the field against the Lions in a 7 p.m. kickoff. Join Ryan and Morgan only on 97.9 WHAV FM for the 6:30 p.m. pre-game show live from inside the stadium. The game is also streamed live at WHAV.net.
