Charles W. “Tryout” Smith, an early pioneer of the amateur journalism movement, will have a new headstone placed in his honor at Haverhill’s Hilldale Cemetery on Sept. 22, but not before the “Hope for Hilldale” cleanup warriors take to the grounds for a cleanup effort.
From 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9, volunteers are asked to join organizers Tammy Dobrosielski and Tom Spitalere to tend to the cemetery grounds in preparation for the headstone’s placement later this month.
Volunteers with access to rakes and power tools including chainsaws are asked to bring them along. Children accompanied by a guardian are welcome to participate, as are students looking for community service hours.
