Elias Sudler, the 27-year-old man who was at the center of a four-hour State and Haverhill Police manhunt Wednesday, gave officers a false name when taken into custody by the State Police tactical and K-9 team just after 2 p.m.

Flushed out of the woods in the area of Carlton Street and “engaged” by State Police K-9 Tank, along with his handler Trooper Thomas Janeczak, Sulder was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Booked at the Newbury State Police barracks Wednesday, Sudler is set for arraignment in Haverhill District Court Thursday.

In addition to a charge of furnishing a false name and social security number, Sulder is charged with the unlicensed possession of a firearm and ammunition and assault and battery on a police officer, among other offenses.

As WHAV previously reported, Sudler was the passenger in a Chevy pickup truck police attempted to stop for an inspection sticker violation on Wednesday afternoon. The truck’s driver, 35-year-old Quincy man Ishaq Abdul-Shafi, fled from police and was ultimately arrested at a Haverhill CVS. Sudler took off on foot and tried to return to the truck for a backpack containing a handgun, but left without it as police closed in on the vehicle.

Driver Abdul-Shafi was charged with failure to stop for police and negligent operation of a motor vehicle, among other offenses.

In addition to Wednesday’s new charges, Sudler’s criminal history includes four felony warrants for charges including kidnapping, stalking, rape and escape from a municipal lockup, State Police said.

Sudler is being held at the Middleton House of Corrections until his arraignment.
