Suspect Captured After Haverhill Manhunt Wanted for Carjacking, Alleged Rape

A 27-year-old man wanted for carjacking and alleged rape took State Police and local authorities on a widespread manhunt across Haverhill for several hours before he was captured Wednesday afternoon, Haverhill Police confirmed.

Elias Sudler, who has a Boston address, was the passenger in a 1996 Chevrolet S pickup truck and was armed with a handgun when he fled from State Police during a traffic stop late Wednesday morning. Police attempted to stop the truck for an inspection sticker violation and chased the vehicle to a Haverhill CVS. The driver, a 35-year-old Quincy man, was taken into custody, while Sudler fled on foot.

Sudler tried to grab a backpack from the truck before fleeing without it. Police later retrieved a handgun from the backpack.

In addition to the alleged rape and carjacking charges, WHAV can confirm Sudler is facing charges of assault on a court/police officer and assault with a deadly weapon.

Police cordoned off Carlton Street to traffic and kept Haverhill High School students inside the building in an abundance of caution as State Police spread out in the area near I-495.
