State Police helicopters were circling Haverhill High School late Wednesday morning just prior to the early dismissal bell as local and state police search for a man who fled from his vehicle on the city’s Route 97.

Around 10 a.m., State Police confirmed a “heavy police presence” in the area near I-495 as the search continued. A source at Haverhill High told WHAV News that the school was not under lockdown, but Superintendent Margaret Marotta’s office said dismissal is held until the situation is contained.

Police describe the suspect as a light-skinned black male with facial tattoos wearing a cowboy hat, a black V-neck shirt and black shorts. A safety alert message issued by the City of Haverhill confirmed the suspect was last seen in the area of Carlton Street and Broadway.
